Screen Shot 2017-03-25 at 11.33.50 AMWhen excess fluids get trapped into body’s tissues, it leads to swelling. This condition is called edema. It can affect any part of the body, specially the hands, ankles, legs and feet. Although it is not a disease in itself, but it is an indication of underlined health problem.  There are many reasons for causing Lymphedema.  Pregnancy is one of the most common causes for this condition. Hot weather, consumption of excessive salt and coffee can also lead to edema. Standing and sitting for a long time in the same position, ageing, premenstrual syndrome, lack of nutrients or physical exercise and poor blood circulation.

Given below are some simple remedies.

Coriander Seeds

Soak 3 table spoon of Coriander Seeds also known as Dhaniya in one glass of water.  Boil the water till the time the water becomes half glass, strain the water, allow it to cool and then drink the water twice daily.

Soak 3 table spoon each of Barley also known as Jawahar in two glasses of water and leave it as it is overnight. Strain the water and drink two glasses of water once in the morning and once in the evening every day till the condition becomes normal.

Food, Fruit and juice intake

Have one banana a day. Limit the amount of salt and caffeine intake. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables instead of cooked and canned food.  Have as much of water melon fruit as possible.  Don’t have it as juice.  Eat it as a fruit. Drink Lemon Juice every morning without adding sugar or salt.  You can add jaggery or honey if you wish. Have jawahar roti without mixing salt instead of rice.  Chew garlic after frying the same with the skin.  Remove the skin of the garlic and have couple of garlics every day.

Parsley Leaves

Crush handful of Parsley Leaves into a paste and apply it on the affected area.  Allow the paste to remain on the affected area for 30 minutes and wash it in luke warm water.  Do this twice every day till condition improves.

Contrast Hydrotherapy

What do you mean by this ?  Contrast hydrotherapy uses hot and cold temperatures of water to help accelerate circulation, and heal pain, injuries and swelling.  It lessens the pain and discomfort. For this type of hydro therapy, you will use both hot and cold water.  The warm water will help the blood flow and the cold water will bring down the swelling in your feet.

How do you do this ?

a) Fill two tubs of water.  One with bearable warm (hot)  water and the other with room temperature cold water.

b) Soak your feet and leg upto the affected area for 3-4 minutes first in the hot water and put your feet straight into the cold water for 1 minute.

c) Continue switching between the two for 15-20 minutes.

d) Do this exercise every 3 hours during the day.

Rub some Olive Oil or Mustard Oil on the affected area and massage gently in the upward direction for about 5 minutes.  Make sure not to massage the area too hard.  It should be very gentle.  Do this 3 times a day. It is best to massage your affected during or after taking the bath.

Epsom Salt

Epsom salt can bring down the swelling very fast, while soothing pain too. This is because it has magnesium sulphate which can be soaked up by the skin to help the blood flow and bring down the swelling. It also helps sore, tired muscles and kill the odour too.

Fill a tub filled with warm water and mix half a cup of Epsom Salt in it. Soak your feet in it for 15-20 minutes. Do upto 3 times a week.

Ginger brings down the amount of water in the body, and helps treat swollen legs.  This is because it lessens the soidum in the body which is a big cause of swelling.  Massage swollen feet with Ginger Oil a few times a day.  You can also chew raw ginger slices or have ginger tea without mixing milk 2-3 times a day.

Exercising often is important to stop your feet from swelling. Exercise helps blood flow and stops blood from building up in our lower limbs.  Walking or jogging for 30 minutes a day, 5 days a week will help a lot.  But if the edema is big enough and if you are finding it difficult to walk or job, then you can drop this idea. Leg strengthening and stretching exercises should be done. Doing Yoga everyday to help blood flow is good. Elevate your leg so that it is above your heart level.

Do Kapalpathi and Anulom Vilom Pranayam every day.
